Those looking to start 2014 by losing weight and becoming healthier are being supported by West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group’s latest campaign.

This January New Year, New You is providing help, support and interactive tools just a click away on its website – www.westleicestershireccg.nhs.uk/newyear – in a bid to help people achieve their goals. There will be access to a body mass index (BMI) calculator to check if you are a healthy weight, as well as the chance to try our health eating assessment.

The campaign, which is reaching out to people through social media channels, is also encouraging those taking up the weight loss challenge to post diary entries on WL CCG’s Facebook page to share their struggles and successes with others. There will be handy tips and advice given through its Facebook page and to its Twitter followers during the month.

Dr Chris Trzcinski, a GP and deputy chairman of WL CCG, said: “Losing weight can be a hard thing to do on your own, which is why we are providing support to people who want to shed those excess pounds.

“Being overweight or obese can make you feel tired or lacking in energy, as well as depressed. It also puts you at risk of developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer and stroke, as well as reducing life expectancy.

“There are around 366,000 people living in West Leicestershire and of these there are 69,787 adults who are obese, so we want to provide everyone in West Leicestershire with the tools they need to lose weight and feel healthier.”

New Year, New You is also supporting the NHS Weight Loss Plan, which urges people to forget about fad diets and follow a free and safe diet which is based on evidence of how to successfully lose weight without putting your health at risk.

Diet and exercise advice are given through 12 easy to use weight loss packs that can be downloaded and followed at home. Also included is a food and activity chart for people to record each day’s calorie intake, physical activity and weekly weight loss and it has practical weight loss advice such as how to shed those pounds without going hungry, hints on 100-calorie snacks and how to deal with cravings and comfort eating.
