A local GP practice and their patient participation group are hosting an event with two eminent specialists in Bowel Cancer to support patients and their families living with the disease.
Quorn Medical Centre is inviting people to the Health Awareness Event on Saturday 17 March 2018 at Quorn Village Hall, 64 Leicester Road, LE12 8BB between 1pm and 4pm.
The key speakers talking about Bowel Cancer awareness and how to cope with the illness will be Dr R. Robinson Consultant Physician and Mr M. Norwood Consultant Surgeon from University Hospitals of Leicestershire and Nuffield Health Leicester.
Bowel cancer is one of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the UK. 1 in 14 men and 1 in 19 women will be diagnosed with bowel cancer during their lifetime.
Dr Chris Barlow, GP at Quorn Medical Centre said: “We felt that it was important to host this event bringing together key specialists to talk to people who are living with cancer or have a history of cancer in the family to learn more about bowel cancer, and answer their questions. We will also have a range of other partners including Macmillan Cancer and AGE UK who will be able to provide advice and guidance on other types of cancer.
“There is no clear reason why some people develop bowel cancer, but we do know that bowel cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer and we have seen survival rates in the UK more than double in the last 40 year.
“If we are going to tackle bowel cancer then it is important for people and their family to talk about it and understand the facts about what is the fourth most common cancer in the UK.
Beverley Carr, Vice-Chair from Quorn Patient Participation Group said: “It is an unfortunate fact that many people may be either directly affected by cancer in their life time or know someone else who is. It doesn’t matter what type of cancer it is, we all need help and support to get- us through these difficult times. We hope to be able to welcome as many people as possible to this event to discuss and understand cancer – the symptoms, treatment, prevention and managing the condition.”
The presentations commence at 1.30pm and other support groups on hand to provide advice will be:
• Bowel Cancer Screening
• Macmillan Cancer and Information Centre
• Voluntary Action South Leicester
• Coping with Cancer in Leicestershire and Rutland
• AGE UK
• Loughborough Cancer Self Help Group
• Quorn Medical Centre
• Light refreshments will also be available.
