NHS organisations in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are reminding patients that NHS 111 is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week over the holiday period to offer help to anyone with an immediate medical need.

This year many GP surgeries across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland will close for four days from Good Friday (April 14) through Easter Monday (April 17), before re-opening on Tuesday 18 April.

Across the holiday period NHS 111 will be there to support anyone with an immediate medical need. Urgent care services in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland have changed to improve access to clinicians for those who need it, and to ensure that health and social care is joined up behind the scenes, so that patients are directed to the right care, first time. These services can all be accessed through calling 111.

Dr Nick Willmott, GP in Leicestershire and clinical lead for West Leicestershire CCG said “People have told us that they don’t always know how to access care when it’s urgent, but not a 999 emergency, particularly when their GP is closed.

“We’ve joined up services behind the scenes, and made it easier for patients to access them in a fast and easy way, through calling 111. NHS 111 is free to call and, for the appropriate patients who need it, is now supported by an expanded team of clinicians, so that patients can be given the support they need.

“Another thing people aren’t often aware of is that you should call 111 for help with a mental health crisis as well as for urgent physical care needs. They can refer to mental health support services as well as other healthcare services, again often being able to make immediate appointments for you and can help you and your loved ones get the care you need.

“Over the Easter break patients can be reassured that if they call NHS 111 they will be directed to the right care, first time.”

If you are a patient registered with any Leicester City GP practice, you can use one of the three Leicester City Healthcare Hubs. Appointments are available between 8am and 8pm, 7days a week at Westcotes Health Centre. Belgrave Health Centre and Saffron Health offer appointments from 6.30pm until 10pm weekdays and at weekends and bank holidays 12 noon until 8pm.
