NHS West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has been shortlisted for a national award – just a few days after being named as one of the country’s top NHS workplaces.
The CCG is in line for one of the awards from the Health Service Journal (HSJ), the UK’s leading healthcare professionals’ magazine – a possible prize in the Primary Care Innovation category for their practice appraisal programme.
The award judges examined the way the CCG helps its 50 GP practices maintain high standards of care and cope with the many challenges of increasing patient demand.
Last week HSJ revealed West Leicestershire was one of the top ten best NHS places to work in England. A CCG plans and pays for many local NHS services for its area, and there are 211 CCGs in England.
West Leicestershire CCG’s Board members and staff are delighted by this latest recognition for its NHS work, particularly in the countdown to their first annual general meeting, taking place next Tuesday, 23 September, at Loughborough Town Hall.
Prof Mayur Lakhani, CCG chair, said: “It’s heartening to receive such good news so soon after learning we are in the ten best NHS workplaces. Just being shortlisted for an HSJ award is an accolade in itself because the competition is always strong each year.
“Our entry showed that we place a great deal of importance on working with our GPs and undertake regular visits to see if they need any support and to provide help where we can, as their role is vital to the success of the entire health system for West Leicestershire.
“At a time when GPs are facing enormous challenges, we have developed a successful and unique practice appraisal process, based on yearly visits to create a genuinely effective two-way conversation with our GPs and practice staff. It enables us to maintain an informed and well-rounded understanding of each of our area’s 50 practices, to share best practice from surgery to surgery, and to help them improve the quality of their service. In a recent survey 99% of practices found the appraisal either excellent, very good or good. We would be happy to share our proven approach with CCGs across the rest of the country.”
Also jointly shortlisted for another HSJ award are East Leicestershire and Rutland CCG, Leicester CCG and West Leicestershire CCG. They are in line for a prize in the category about improving care for patients with ‘Long-term Conditions’, such as diabetes, dementia and severe breathlessness.
They will know the results on 19 November when the winners are announced at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
