As the cold weather returns, the risk of falls and slips increases especially with the current icy and slippery conditions. Health chiefs at Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland CCGs are encouraging residents to plan ahead and take the appropriate measures to ensure you stay safe and healthy as the new year approaches.

With the temperatures forecast to remain low, slips and falls become more likely especially during wet, cold and icy conditions.

Don't let the elderly and vulnerable 'soldier on' this winter

GPs in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are urging people to look out for their elderly and vulnerable relatives and neighbours this winter – and make sure they don’t ‘soldier on’ in silence as winter starts to bite.
Older people and those with long-term health conditions are particularly susceptible to illness and isolation at this time of year, yet it can sometimes be difficult for those at risk to admit they need help.

Patients urged to make the right call to NHS 111 to access healthcare this Christmas

Health leaders across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) are reminding patients that they can call NHS 111 24 hours a day, 7 days a week over Christmas and New Year if they need urgent medical care. And patients calling 111 will be able to speak directly to a clinician if they need to.

Patients reassured that GP care is available over Christmas and New Year

Health leaders across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) are reminding patients that medical care is still available over the Christmas and New Year Holiday when their local GP practices are closed.

In Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland most GP practices will close at their normal time on Friday 22nd December and not reopen again until the morning of Wednesday 27th. They close again at their normal time on Friday 29th and reopen on the morning of Tuesday 2nd January.

However, there is still care available for people who need an urgent appointment.

Have you ordered your repeat prescriptions?

Patients in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are being urged not to leave it too late to order their repeat prescriptions this Christmas.

Last year almost 150 people left themselves without their repeat medicine over Christmas and New Year last year[1]. So the area’s clinical commissioning groups are issuing the reminder so that people can have a healthy Christmas without worrying about vital medication.

Protect yourself and others from winter sickness bugs

Patients, carers and members of the public are being reminded to be vigilant when it comes to protecting themselves and others from seasonal sickness bugs.

Norovirus (winter sickness bug) is a very common viral infection which causes forceful vomiting and diarrhoea, but it’s usually a mild illness. It can be caught at any time of the year but is more common in the winter months.

Norovirus can lead to dehydration which occurs when your body loses more fluid than you take in due to vomiting or diarrhoea. Dehydration can be dangerous in the elderly and very young.
