Clinical commissioning groups urge greater awareness of breast cancer

10th October 2013

Every year 55,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. Local NHS leaders in Leicestershire and Rutland are supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month, to highlight the impact that breast cancer can have on self-image.

The physical and emotional impact of breast cancer and its treatment can change the way a woman feels about her body and the way she sees herself. This in turn can affect a woman’s self-esteem and relationships at a time when she may already be at her lowest. Some women find that they lose a sense of who they are.

The CCGS are working together with GP surgeries and local partnership organisations to help people understand the risks of developing heart disease and how it can be prevented.

It is estimated that one in 20 people in Leicestershire and Rutland suffer from coronary heart disease, and the rate is likely to rise as more people live longer.
