Unsure what medical help you need or how to access it? Call 111

We do understand it is difficult to keep up to date with all the various ways to access healthcare in West Leicestershire. There are a lot of options, and different services are open at different times, there is a lot to remember.

Fortunately, you don’t have to navigate all these services yourself without support. You will probably have heard about the NHS 111 service but many people don’t know the range of services that they provide.

If you need immediate medical help but it’s not a life threatening emergency and your GP and pharmacist aren’t available, if you call 111 they will be able to help. You’ll speak to a highly trained call adviser who will assess your condition and, if necessarily transfer you to a clinician for a second opinion. They can give you the healthcare advice you need or direct you to the local service that can help you best. That could an out-of-hours doctor, an urgent care centre or a walk-in centre, a community nurse, an emergency dentist or a late-opening chemist. They will be able to tell you the opening times, locations and in many cases be able to make you an appointment with the service so that you don’t have to wait.

Another thing people aren’t often aware of is that you should call 111 for help with a mental health crisis as well as for urgent physical care needs.  They can refer to mental health support services as well as other healthcare services, again often being able to make immediate appointments for you and can help you and your loved ones get the care you need.
