Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock with Caroline Trevithick and Mayur Lakahni from WL CCGIt was fantastic to be able to host a visit from Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care today (Thursday 7 February).

The visit took place at Hinckley District Hospital and was an opportunity to discuss in more detail how the £8m investment announced in December will benefit the local health services and increase the care we can provide more locally within Hinckley and Bosworth.

West Leicestershire CCG was represented by Interim Accountable Officer, Caroline Trevithick and Chair, Professor Mayur Lakhani (pictured, above right). We were joined by Rachel Bilsborough from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and GPs Darren Jackson and Anu Rao. Professor Lakhani explained how West Leicestershire has a solid platform from which to develop Primary Care Networks and the general direction of travel for primary care set out in the NHS Long Term Plan.

We were also joined at the meeting by senior representatives from Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council who highlighted the joint working with health to support prevention.

Finally we took the Secretary of State on a tour of the hospital to show him the challenges faced by staff working there and why we needed to invest in the facilities.

The Secretary of State commented on the powerful business case put forward by the CCG which was entirely consistent with the NHS Long Term Plan of more care being provided locally.  He also commented that it was great to be able to visit a community – based hospital, very different from his usual visits to high tech hospitals and was keen to find out how the local hospitals fitted into the overall picture of care for the people of Hinckley and Bosworth.

This was a very important and helpful visit and we want to acknowledge the support of the team at Hinckley District Hospital who coped brilliantly with the impact of the visit and provided excellent support.
