Who we are
We are the Medicines Optimisation team at West Leicestershire Clinical Commissioning Group (WL CCG) - the organisation responsible for planning and improving healthcare services on behalf of our communities. Our team is made up of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and administration staff.
What we do
We focus on what matters to local people and their families. We work to ensure the safe and effective use of medicines across all the services we support, to enable the best possible outcomes for patients. In other words, we ensure that the right patients get the right choice of medicine, at the right time. By focusing on patients and their experiences, we help West Leicestershire residents in the following key areas:
- Self care for minor ailments
- Managing long term health conditions (includinng respiratory disease)
- Repeat prescriptions
- Medicines safety
- Medicines value
We also manage the GP prescribing budget in West Leicestershire. Last year we spent over £50m on prescribed medicines in primary care. A significant proportion of this money went on items that were never taken, not needed or available to buy over the counter. Therefore, another key focus for us is to ensure that the NHS and patients get the very best services, in terms of quality, outcomes and value.
